Univrses and the Swedish Transport Administration join forces in game-changing road management initiative

Leveraging AI technology and connected vehicle cameras, the collaboration aims to boost safety, streamline efficiency, and promote sustainability on Swedish roads.

Stockholm, Sweden – March 22, 2023

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has announced a collaboration with Univrses, a leading provider of computer vision and machine learning solutions, to help optimize the country’s road infrastructure management. The partnership aims to leverage Univrses’ cutting-edge AI software, 3DAI™ City, to digitize and manage roadside infrastructure, ultimately contributing to a safer, more sustainable and efficient transportation network.

Connected Road Surface Monitoring

Trafikverket has been a pioneer in the field of road management, annually measuring the condition of state-owned roads with special measuring vehicles. However, with an increasing population and ongoing urbanization, the administration recognizes the growing demand for more efficient monitoring and maintenance of Sweden’s vast road network. To address this demand, Trafikverket has recently signed a contract with AI company Univrses to work on a revolutionary project – called Digital Summer – for Connected Road Surface Monitoring.

Through the partnership with Univrses, Trafikverket will harness the power of advanced machine learning technology to enhance the management of Swedish roads. During Digital Summer, Univrses’ 3DAI™ City platform will be used to capture changes in the condition of road surfaces through connected vehicle cameras. The AI software allows for the digitization of Sweden’s roadside infrastructure, transforming physical assets into live data and generating never-before-seen insights. Univrses’ scalable Analytics tools then enable transportation officials and infrastructure managers to efficiently monitor roads and roadside assets and make better-informed decisions. This helps streamline operations and allows them to work proactively to benefit both the environment and society at large.

ADAS and AD-powered data harvesting

A key partner in this project is Zenseact, a leading developer of Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving technologies.

Björn Eklund, Project Sponsor at Trafikverket, stated, “Univrses and Zenseact is one of three partnerships we have started up which aim to explore innovative solutions for the development of better road infrastructure management. This joint effort aligns with Trafikverket’s objectives of enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the transportation sector while keeping innovation at the forefront in managing Swedish road networks.”

Univrses and Trafikverket have collaborated on various projects in the past, but this initiative marks a significant milestone in their partnership. Jonathan Selbie, CEO of Univrses, is excited about the new project and its potential impact on road management in Sweden and beyond:

“This initiative is ground-breaking, and it has the potential to transform road monitoring and infrastructure management as we know it. We’re thrilled about taking this next step together with our friends at Trafikverket.” Selbie continues: “This project perfectly highlights the importance of partnership in driving innovation towards deployment to realise a better future.”

The collaboration between Univrses and Trafikverket, with the contribution from Zenseact, marks a significant step towards a smarter road transportation network in Sweden – but it also sets an example for the world. Being the first initiative of its kind, the aspiration is that other countries and organizations can learn from this model to enhance their infrastructure management.

About Connected Road Surface Monitoring

The project is carried out as a strategic collaboration project between Trafikverket and Vinnova’s strategic innovation program InfraSweden. Through such collaboration, the parties will be able to leverage each other’s knowledge, resources, and experience in leading and driving innovation and development in order to achieve the project’s goals and benefits more efficiently. Apart from the participation of Univrses and the utilization of 3DAI™ City, Digital Summer includes Mercedes Benz Sweden and NIRA Dynamics. The project runs until 2026.

About 3DAI™ City

3DAI™ City is a state-of-the-art AI software. By deploying camera units onto moving vehicles, large amounts of timely, relevant and actionable road data can be captured. The data is accessible through Univrses’ web-based and scalable dashboard and Analytics tools and enable city officials and infrastructure managers to make better decisions, streamline operations and reduce emissions.

The 3DAI™ City software, which sets a new industry standard for road monitoring and maintenance, is being deployed around the world to empower people, businesses and governments to make data-driven decisions.
